I just love this quote from an old journal therapy website I found several years ago. The site is long gone, but I saved the quote for a handout I've been using for years.
"Journaling is effective when dealing with loss and grief, coping with life-threatening and chronic illness, recovering from addictions, eating disorders and trauma, repairing troubled marriages and family relationships, increasing communication skills, developing healthier self-esteem, getting better perspective on life and clarifying life goals."
POWERFUL STUFF!

POWERFUL STUFF!
A little about me and my passion for journaling.
As a little girl, about the age of 8, my grandmother gave me a collection of old notebooks my dad had used for school. I tore out the pages he had written on and kept the unused portions. These were my first journals. I was given diaries as gifts -- you know, those cute little decorative books with tiny locks -- yes, they were cute but they were not enough. I couldn't fit what I wanted to write on one little page. So I continued to use larger notebooks. The look of them didn't matter. It was the size and the comfort of them. They had to be spiral-bound, not glue-bound so they could lie flat or fold back.
But I digress. However this fits into the process of my journaling course. Comfort.
I spent my teenage years relying on notebook after notebook, pouring my thoughts and feelings out. I survived my younger years of emotional trauma and hardship by using different techniques as needed to, as I now call it, get the poison out. I would write short stories based on true events. I would write letters to people in my life without actually giving them, but as a way to get it all out of my head and heart and isolate it down on paper.
It saved my life, I truly believe.
My first experience in the helping profession was working as a trauma and crisis counsellor, initially working weekends on a crisis line for survivors of sexual abuse, then at their homes. I was trained to use journaling techniques as a follow up exercise for after they got off the phone and after I left their homes. When I would have the opportunity to talk with the women again on another occasion, they gave feedback on the impact of the journaling.
I continued to use journaling with teenagers when I worked at a youth drop in centre and with abused women when I worked at a women's shelter. Through my business, Mindz 'n Transit, I contracted with Wellspring Niagara, facilitating journaling classes for cancer patients, with amazing results -- like magic!
As a freelance writer, journaling exercises really help keep things flowing. Blocks can happen at any time and for so many reasons. Sometimes we have to trick our minds to kick it in again. Certain exercises seems to have that ability.
Journaling has right brained and left brained effects. While the right brain includes our creative selves and the areas that needing to heal, our left brain is so grateful for the written word as it gives it a break from constantly having to work towards keeping us organized and responsible.
